President's Award for Commitment to Law and Civic Education

Outstanding Civics Teacher Award

This annual award is given to an outstanding Louisiana elementary, middle or high school teacher who imparts knowledge and understanding of Law and Civic Education and demonstrates the use of interactive learning techniques that make a difference in student learning.  Award presentation is a joint partnership of the Louisiana Center for Law and Civic Education and the Louisiana State Bar Association.

The recipient is honored at a reception at the Louisiana State Bar Association's Midyear Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana. The winner is presented with a plaque and a monetary award in recognition of their commitment to law and civic education.

Do you know a student who has made a difference or an improvement of the quality of life in their school, home, or community through the use of civic engagement? The LCLCE recognizes a Louisiana middle or high school student who exemplifies what it means to be an engaged citizen.
 
This year's recipient will be honored at the LCLCE Summer Institute on July 20, 2011 at the Louisiana Supreme Court Building in the New Orleans French Quarter.

The 2011 honoree is
Hamilton Winters
 
Hamilton Winters, a sophomore at West Monroe High School in Ouachita Parish, “has consistently been involved in activities of community service and civics his whole life,” says Assistant Principal and nominator Janis Brewster.
 
Winters, a Boy Scout since first grade, was awarded the highest honor in scouting, Eagle Scout when he was 14 years old. In third grade, he organized a canned soup drive for the local Ronald McDonald House. He was selected as Fifth Grade Student of the Year at West Ridge Middle School. While in middle school, Winters was chosen for Who’s Who, Junior National Honor Society, and served as Student Council President. He currently serves his Sophomore Class as Student Council President.
 
In 2010, Winters was selected as Louisiana’s Young Ambassador by First Lady, Supriya Jindal and the Special Olympics. He has attended Junior National Young Leaders Conferences in Washington, D.C. and Boston, Massachusetts, and also attended the Presidential Inauguration of President Obama. Winters is a participant in the West Monroe High School Law Studies Program and has performed on the mock trial team. He currently serves on the Louisiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council which meets with legislators to discuss issues that affect the youth of Louisiana.
