Advances to the "We the People" National Competition
|
Congratulations to Haynes Academy for qualifying as this year's "We the People" State Champion! Five schools representing four congressional districts competed in the annual "We the People" State Competition that was held in Baton Rouge on January 28th.
Those schools and team teachers were:
Louisiana House Representative Patricia Smith and LCLCE President Brian Engeron presented the WTP State Championship trophy to teacher Jamie Staub of Haynes Academy. Special thanks to the distinguished panel of judges, Thanks also to all the teachers, school administrators and many volunteers who participated in the We the People program this year.

Leslie Brown Is the Recipient of the
2011 Outstanding Civics Teacher Award |
This annual award is given to an outstanding Louisiana elementary, middle or high school teacher who imparts knowledge and understanding of Law and Civic Education and demonstrates the use of interactive learning techniques that make a difference in student learning.
The Award is a joint partnership of the Louisiana Center for Law and Civic Education and the Louisiana State Bar Association. Ms. Brown, a teacher at North Caddo High School in Vivian, Louisiana, was honored at a reception at the Louisiana State Bar Association's Midyear Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana. |

Back-to-Back Professional Development Programs |
Educators! Mark your Calendars!
Two outstanding two-day professional development programs will be offered back-to-back. The programs will be held in the historic New Orleans French Quarter from July 19 - July 22, 2011. The LCLCE will be accepting applications soon. Check your upcoming LCLCE Newsletters announcing enrollment period and providing an application form. Enrollment is limited to thirty attendees so early applications are recommended.
- Out of town participants will be housed at the Iberville Suites in the historic French Quarter
- Teachers are eligible to receive a free set of "We the People" textbooks and a teacher's guide
- Pedagogy sessions
- Learn directly from Louisiana judges about the Court system and its process

The LCLCE is currently accepting applications for schools, lawyers and judges interested in participating in the Lawyers in the Classroom/Judges in the Classroom programs. Legislative Youth Advisory Council
Application Period Open |

The application period is now open for membership on the Louisiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council for high school students who have an interest in representing the voices of other young people around the state. The Youth Council is a yearly-appointed body composed entirely of students that addresses the issues affecting the youth of Louisiana and is overseen by the Louisiana Commission on Civic Education. Deadline is March 15, 2011. Applicants may apply online at http://civiced.louisiana.gov/. The 2010-2011 Legislative Youth Advisory Council will begin its work in June at the State Capitol.
